Synopsis
Once on This Island opened Broadway on October 18, 1990, and ran for over a year. The show garnered eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Score, and Book. In 1994, Once on This Island opened in London, where it captured the Olivier Award for Best Musical.
This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid sings and dances the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a young man from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his family, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
